DIGITAL SERVICES & TECHNOLOGY
Namibia is fostering a digital economy, including fintech, software development, and e-commerce. Government initiatives support startups and attract foreign investment into the digital sector, with growing opportunities in cybersecurity, cloud computing and artificial intelligence.
The digital services and technology sector is a high-priority area for Namibia due to its potential to drive economic diversification, enhance productivity and efficiency, promote financial inclusion, create employment opportunities, improve service delivery, attract foreign direct investment, boost innovation and entrepreneurship, improve global competitiveness and support other sectors.
Namibia through African telco, Paratus Group, together with Telecom Namibia were selected to build the cable landing station (CLS) for the Equiano subsea internet cable in Namibia, a high-capacity submarine telecommunications cable that runs along the west coast of Africa. This connection dramatically increases Namibia's internet bandwidth and speed, fostering economic growth and digital inclusion. It positions Swakopmund as a vital hub for regional connectivity. The cable's presence is expected to attract investment in digital services and technology sectors. Ultimately, Equiano enhances Namibia's competitiveness in the global digital economy.
Namibia has also launched the Namibia Digital School Program which is an initiative designed to integrate digital learning tools and resources into the Namibian education system. The programme provides digital content, teacher training and improved school technology access and also aims to bridge the digital division and enhance student learning. The program focuses on equipping students with crucial 21st-century digital skills. Ultimately, this initiative was meant to strive to improve educational quality and accessibility across Namibia.
There are more opportunities that exist in Namibia such as developing innovative digital solutions for local challenges, providing cybersecurity services, leveraging AI and cloud
computing, expanding e-commerce and digital marketplaces and creating digital content and applications for the African market.
